They create environments where children feel safe, supported, engaged, and valued - and where parents feel confident in the partnership. How to Recognize What Quality Child Care Looks Like

1. Teachers Are Actively Engaged with Children

One of the first things I encourage parents to observe is how teachers interact with children. Are teachers sitting on the floor playing with children? Asking questions? Offering encouragement? Helping children solve problems? In quality programs, teachers are actively engaged rather than simply supervising from a distance. The relationships between teachers and children are often one of the strongest indicators of overall program quality.

2. Children Appear Comfortable and Secure

Take a moment to observe the children. Do they seem relaxed? Curious? Comfortable approaching teachers when they need help? No classroom will be perfectly quiet or perfectly happy every moment of the day. Children have big feelings, disagreements, and challenging moments. What matters is whether children appear emotionally safe and supported when those moments happen.

3. The Environment Is Organized but Not Rigid

Quality classrooms have structure, but they don't feel robotic. Children benefit from predictable routines and clear expectations, yet they also need opportunities to explore, create, and make choices. A strong program balances consistency with flexibility.

4. Communication with Families Is Prioritized

Parents should never feel like outsiders in their child's experience. Ask how teachers communicate with families, share updates, and address concerns. Quality programs recognize that strong parent partnerships help children succeed.

When communication is open and consistent, trust grows on both sides.

Pay attention not only to what teachers say, but how they say it. Do teachers redirect behavior calmly? Offer guidance respectfully? Get down to a child's level when speaking?
