Choosing a child care program is a big milestone for you you and your little one. You tour, ask questions, weigh your options, and finally land on the place that feels right for your family. And then sometimes… you wait. For many parents, landing on a child care wait list brings a whole new wave of stress. There’s relief in having clarity about what you want, but also uncertainty about timing, availability, and what happens next. The waiting can feel just as overwhelming as the decision itself. If you’re currently stuck in that in-between space, here’s what I want you to know first: this stage is normal, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

Once parents narrow down their preferred programs, they often expect the process to feel settled, and move forward smoothly. Instead, in many programs, wait lists can introduce new questions:

  • Will we get in?

  • Should we keep touring just in case?

  • How long is too long to wait?

  • What if we miss something important while we’re waiting?

As a director with a wait list of over 100 children at any given time, I’ve seen how heavy this stage can feel. Parents are trying to plan their lives while sitting with unknowns that are largely out of their control.

While you can’t control openings or timelines, there are ways to regain a sense of steadiness during this season. Start by reminding yourself that being on a wait list means you’ve already done something important - you’ve clarified what matters most for your child and your family.  That clarity is a win, even if the next step hasn’t happened yet. It can also help to shift your focus from outcomes to preparedness. Instead of waiting passively, use this time to:

  • stay organized with notes from tours and conversations

  • reflect on what made your top choices stand out

  • prepare thoughtful follow-up questions if a spot opens

  • consider what flexibility (if any) you have with start dates or schedules

  • Check-in with the school(s) often to keep your name fresh with the staff and remind them that you are very interested in enrollment.

These small actions don’t rush the process, but they do help you feel more grounded and ready.

While you're waiting, it’s common for doubt to creep in during this stage. Parents start second-guessing their decision simply because the process has stalled. If that’s happening for you, pause before assuming something is wrong. Waiting doesn’t mean you chose poorly. Often, it simply means demand is high, and you have selected a program that is highly sought after. Trust the work you already did, and give yourself permission to sit in the pause without rewriting the entire decision. One of the hardest parts of wait lists is the feeling that everyone else has it figured out and you waited too long to start looking. In reality, many families are quietly navigating the same uncertainty.

If you’d like support organizing your thoughts, questions, and next steps while you wait, I’ve created a practical workbook to help parents feel more confident navigating tours, decisions, and follow-ups. You can find it here: The Child Care Tour Workbook
